At Thrumpton our chosen language is French and the children in Key Stage 2 have a weekly lessons ona a rolling programme half termly.

We use 'La Jolie Ronde' as a basis for planning  but lessons are fully interactive with a variety of songs rhymes and games being introduced.

We believe lessons should be fun and enjoyable and we encourage the children to have the confidence to speak with enthusiasm and enjoyment.  There is a balance between reading and writing activities but children spend much of their time in lessons interacting in conversations asking and answering questions and singing songs and rhymes.
Our aims of teaching MFL are for the children to:

  • foster an interest in learning another language
  • be aware that language has a structure, and that this structure differs from one language to another
  • develop speaking and listening skills
  • gain enjoyment, pride and a sense of achievement
  • explore their own cultural identities and those of others

The children in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 are introduced to other languages by sometimes  answering  the register in different languages and singing simple French songs in assemblies.
